Jalan Alor Night Market: Photo Diary of Kuala Lumpur’s Eat Street

Air thick with the scent of satay and durian greets you at Jalan Alor Night Market. As the sun sets over the metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, a buzz of excitement takes over as restaurants spill into the street, stalls begin being constructed, grills fire up, and the crowd begins to swell. This transformation begins around 5:00pm, but head there after dark to experience Jalan Alor in full flory.

Jalan Alor night market used to be the scene of the city’s red light district, and some hints of its past remain. This long stretch of road provides a different atmosphere to the ever-rising mega malls of nearby Bukit Bintang. It gives a sense of ‘good old days’, where crowding around tables atop plastic stools surrounded by friends and food is all that matters.

The food along the street is diverse, just like the Malaysian population, and you can find almost any cuisine you could ask for. Whether you are salivating over the thought of some marinated wings, or the idea of noodles is making your stomach rumble, you’ll find it here. Many of the stalls and restaurants will have menus with pictures which makes choosing easier.
